About

a muddy cup

Our Seattle-based coffee shop offers espresso, tea, a rotating selection of pastries and free WiFi. Our coffee drinks are made with fair-trade, organic beans that we roast in-house. We use organic milk and offer a wide selection of alternative milks.

We're Sarah and Matt. . .

We both started working in coffee early in our careers. With our passion for this powerful plant and what joy it brings to the masses, the idea of building a cafe of our own began brewing.

In 2010, we decided to take a leap of faith and MAKE our own work. Having very little money or knowledge of building a business, we literally started from scratch, learning along the way. It took us 7 months of tearing apart our space and building, but on October 12, 2010, A Muddy Cup was officially born and open for business.

From the mostly recycled, reclaimed materials we used in building our space, to learning how  to roast our own beans so we could provide the freshest coffee roasted in micro batches, to sourcing from organic, fair trade suppliers, we have invested in the values and principles that are important to us in every detail of our business.

Over the last decade, we have grown with the Wallingford neighborhood, learning and adapting with our ever changing times.

our coffee

We use only the best fair-trade, organically grown coffee beans and roast them using a unique process called air roasting. We’ve found that the air roasting process helps highlight the true, unique flavors of the quality beans we roast by keeping the beans from burning and turning bitter.

We purchase our beans through a woman-owned and operated organization called Café Femenino. Through this foundation, women coffee producers in rural communities around the world work together to achieve empowerment, build social support networks and earn income through the production and sale of their coffee. The Café Femenino foundation also provides grants for projects and programs that enhance the lives of women and their families in coffee growing communities around the world.
